About Erica…

Erica Kemp, Partner, Alsters Kelley LLP
Erica Kemp, Partner, Alsters Kelley LLP

Erica attended Aberystwyth University obtaining a Degree in History before starting her working career as a Graduate Management Trainee at Habitat.

After gaining in store experience, she moved to Habitat’s Head Office in Oxfordshire and became a Buyer handling a substantial purchasing budget and liaising with manufacturers and designers to purchase and develop products for the Habitat stores.

She continued working in the Retail Industry for a number of years spending time as a Buyer for Owen, Owen, the Department Store group based in Liverpool, at Royal Doulton where she was a Buyer for the Lawleys chain of shops before moving into a product development role with Royal Doulton.

Moving back into retail buying she joined Matalan with responsibility for buying the non-fashion offering within the stores joining Matalan at a very exciting time and a period of substantial store expansion. The role was extremely challenging and exciting involving travel extensively in the Far East and India and Europe, attending trade shows and liaising with manufacturers and wholesalers both in the UK and abroad.

Erica took some time out in 1996 when her daughter was born and at this point rather than returning to buying which required considerable amounts of travel both within the UK and abroad she decided that the timing was right to pursue a career in Law which had always been of real interest. She attended the Chester College of Law to undertake the CPE conversion course (the equivalent of a 3 year Law Degree in 1 year) and then undertook the Legal Practice Course, which is the part of the training that teaches you to be a Solicitor. Erica was fortunate to obtain a training contract at a local firm in Chester before moving to the Midlands in 2001 and joining Alsters Kelley LLP in 2002.

Erica was made an Associate at Alsters Kelley in 2005, became a Partner in the firm in June 2006 and became Head of the Family Department in 2008. Erica is one of five Members at Alsters Kelley, three of whom are women.

Alsters Kelley remains one of the largest regional law firms in the Midlands focusing on offering excellence in legal advice and client service to mainly private clients. The Family Department is one of the largest in the area offering support and advice to clients to deal with family breakdown and financial matters arising. We also have one of the largest Care Departments in the area offering support to vulnerable children and parents in matters where the Local Authority are involved due to child protection issues.

Erica strongly believes that coming to the Law later in life and having worked in a competitive, demanding, commercial environment is extremely helpful to her role as a Member in her own firm.
