Getting to know you… our Monday Motivation Feature

Name: Hilary Sims

Business Name: Life Balance Counselling

Who inspires you and why?

My mum ran a wool shop for 50 years and I grew up there as a small child.  I used to see how she dealt with customers and the relationship she had with these customers.

She always treated them with respect  and was always there to offer them support with their knitting and sewing, but would also listen to any problems they wanted to share.

Perhaps this is where my desire to support people has come from.

What’s your biggest achievement?

Running my own business for 7 years.  I didn’t know how to deal with everything that being self-employed throws at you.  I found ways to learn to run the business, as well as supporting my clients.

What’s your top business tip?

Set realistic targets, it’s better to over-achieve than feel you have failed.

What’s your favourite quote?

It always seems impossible until it is done” – Nelson Mandela

and just for fun…

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a vet, until I saw tem put their hands up the cow’s backside.  I soon changed my mind.

Who would you love to be stuck in a lift with and why?

Johnny Wilkinson – I love rugby and to see his dedication to being the best he can be is very inspiring.

Tell us about an embarrassing moment (one you can laugh about now).

We were newly married and my husband had been away on a course for 8 weeks.  I had arranged to collect him from the railway station.  As you can imagine,  I was very excited to see him.

On the way to the train station, my cap fell off my front tooth.  Not the most sexy smile for my husband after he had been away for 8 weeks.
