What is a Solopreneur?
Definition of a Solopreneur:
“An entrepreneur who works alone… ‘solo’ running their business single-handed.”
“A person who sets up and runs a business on their own.”
Almost everyone had the experience of working on your own during the pandemic but many business owners choose to operate that way as a sole trader or sole director. This may be down to reasons of autonomy, or simply that you prefer to outsource, rather than employ someone to work for, or alongside you.
Solopreneurs are often forgotten as many Awards, grants, and business growth schemes seek to attract businesses with a minimum of 5 employees. Since the Woman Who Achieves Awards started in 2016, the number of Solopreneurs entering increased rapidly year on year, so the Woman Who Achieves Solopreneur Awards were born in 2019.
Sandra Garlick MBE, Founder of Woman Who, and herself a Solopreneur said:
“It became increasingly clear to me that these women in business were forgotten or frustrated at the lack of opportunities to get experience of entering Awards. I wanted to create something that not only recognised their achievements but created a supportive community around them. It can be longely working on your own.
I ran the first Solopreneur Awards in 2019 and was amazed at the community it created, including collaborations and friendships that are still going strong today.” Sandra Garlick MBE, Founder of Woman Who
So what does a Solopreneur look like?
- You have complete autonomy and control of your business.
- You can work, or not work, exactly when you choose. You have flexibility.
- You can work from home, in a coffee shop, or anywhere you choose.
- You are the business.
- Everything you earn is yours.
- You probably work longer hours than you should.
- You wear all the hats in the business.
- Sometimes you forget to take time off.
- You can get lonely having to make all the decisions.
