Creating Momentum for the Second Half of the Year
The second half of the year is when you create momentum with intention and stop trying to cram twelve months of ambition into the remaining months. Business doesn’t follow a straight line. It’s about learning, adapting and continuing to move forward, even when the path looks different from the one you first planned. In this article, we look at how to build that momentum one step at a time.
TLDR
- Celebrate how far you’ve come before deciding where you’re going next.
- Focus on progress, not perfection.
- Protect your energy as carefully as you protect your business.
- Prioritise the work that creates visibility, relationships and growth.
- Build momentum through consistent, intentional action.
- The second half of the year isn’t about catching up and burning out, but about moving forward with purpose.
There’s something about reaching the summer months that invites reflection. You know that when January arrives, you’re full of excitement, fresh notebooks, and ambitious plans, but by August, the reality of running a business has taken over. You might have come across opportunities that you never expected, challenges that tested you, and those carefully crafted goals may have shifted more than you imagined. That’s okay!
Before You Look Ahead, Take Time to Look Back
When life is busy, it’s tempting to jump straight into the next project or set another shiny goal, but one of the most valuable things you can do for your business is pause.
Reflection creates clarity. Stopping to review what you need to continue (or let go of) is something many of us overlook. Most of the time, we’re so focused on the next milestone that we forget how far we’ve already come, which is why the questions in my Woman Who Awards Entry Form are so thought-provoking.
Here are a few questions you can ask yourself about your business:
- What’s gone well?
- Which opportunities have brought the biggest return, whether financially or personally?
- What have I enjoyed the most?
- What have I learned about myself?
- Which activities have genuinely helped my business grow?
The answers might surprise you. Sometimes, the things we think are small wins turn out to be the foundations of something much bigger. I’m always telling my Amplify Experience members that it’s not about adding more, but about amplifying what you already have.
Busy Doesn’t Always Mean Productive
One lesson many business owners learn (often the hard way) is that being busy isn’t the same as making progress. It’s easy to spend your days answering emails, updating your website, tweaking social media graphics or saying yes to every opportunity that comes your way.
I know those tasks have their place, but if they dominate your week, they can quietly pull you away from the work that actually moves your business forward.
Creating momentum isn’t about doing more stuff! You need to focus on doing more of what matters. That might mean making the sales calls you’ve been putting off, sending those follow ups, launching the programme you’ve been talking about for months, writing the newsletter, booking the networking event, or recording the podcast.
Whatever it is for your business, identify the activities that create visibility, build relationships, and generate revenue, then give them the attention they deserve.
The Power of Creating Space
Recently, I shared an article on LinkedIn about slowing down over the summer. It resonated with my connections, some of whom talked about pausing or taking their laptop out into the garden.
While many people see summer as a time to slow down, I see it as an opportunity to step back from the daily whirlwind, think more strategically, and prepare for what’s coming next.
Rather than constantly reacting to what’s in front of me, I create space to reconnect with my bigger vision and decide where my energy will have the greatest impact. It’s a simple shift, but an incredibly powerful one. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do isn’t to tick another task off your to-do list, but to give yourself permission to stop, think, and reset.
What Burnout Can Teach Us
At the time of writing this post, I’m nursing a few bumps and bruises. Breaking bones and falling are things I seem to be well known for! After all, the Woman Who Awards was founded after I broke my ankle and was forced to pause.
Alongside the various bumps and breaks, I’ve also experienced burnout, and I think it’s important to speak honestly about how this affects you and your business.
Like so many business owners, I believed there was a time when success felt closely linked to working long hours, saying yes to everything, and being constantly available. Many of us have fallen into that trap. The problem is that burnout doesn’t arrive overnight. For most of us, it builds in the background over months of pushing harder, ignoring the warning signs, and believing that slowing down somehow means falling behind or failing.
The good news is that burnout also teaches us that sustainable success can’t be built through exhaustion, but through consistency, boundaries, focusing on what matters, and recognising when your energy feels depleted.
Your energy is one of the most important resources your business has. I often talk about rebuilding momentum by creating healthier habits. This might be working smarter, reviewing regularly, and giving yourself permission to build a business that supports your life, rather than consumes it. That’s one lesson worth carrying into every season of business.
Momentum Is Built One Step at a Time
You can’t sit back and expect momentum to arrive in one big breakthrough. It’s something that’s built quietly and can be so subtle that you might miss it if you’re not paying attention.
Think about the following:
- How about the conversation you nearly didn’t have?
- That blog post/Substack you almost didn’t publish.
- The networking event you nearly skipped.
- Those follow-up emails.
- The recommendation or testimonial.
- Making that small decision to keep showing up.
Keep taking those small steps and watch them build into something amazing over the remaining months.
Your Rest of the Year Starts Today
Whatever the first half of the year has looked like, I want you to remember that you haven’t fallen behind or missed your chance. Pause and reset. Challenge that negative inner voice by changing the narrative. How about thinking of all the information you have collected since January?
- You now know more about your business.
- You know more about your clients.
- And you know more about yourself.
You can use all that knowledge to review your goals with kindness (let’s leave the criticism behind), reset your priorities and intentions, protect your energy, and focus on the work you love that helps your business grow.
We create momentum by moving forward with purpose and care.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you can have a powerful message, but if you’re hiding behind your work, fewer people ever get to hear it. As someone who helps women overcome the hidden subconscious patterns that are capping their income and growth, I realised I needed to take my own advice and become more visible too.
Sandra Garlick MBE’s “Amplify” Experience came at exactly the right time. She has a brilliant way of creating a safe, supportive environment whilst gently encouraging you to step outside your comfort zone and put yourself out there. She even creates the stages for you to do so. Every weekly session challenged me to think bigger, take action and stop waiting until I felt completely ready.
Because of Amplify, I’ve started actively applying for speaking opportunities, and now have my biggest live audience to date this September. If you’re serious about growing your visibility and sharing your expertise, Sandra will absolutely help you make that happen.
